Pictures!

I know you have all been anxiously awaiting the video clips of our rehearsal process, but there's a bit of a hold up. In the meantime, enjoy the photos below as well as our new website!! We were given webspace on the UNCA server and you can now visit us at www.unca.edu/drama/tempest. See you there!

The first draft version of Prospero's robe!!

They're a bit blurry, but you can really feel the power in Prospero in this scene. Also, he will be 6 feet off the ground when the set is completed. He already looks so imposing!

We have a concept, and we know how to use it!

Part of our concept for this show focuses around the idea that all the action of the play is a game of strategy in which the other characters are manipulated by Prospero. To this end, the concept calls for each character to appear as a game piece on a large, circular Byzantine-style chess board. The board will be laid out on stage using sheets of luan (or maybe masonite) cute to shape. These pieces will be manipulated and placed on stage by ensemble members in a stylized way.

We've played in rehearsal before with how these set pieces will be placed on stage, practicing alternately with sheets of paper and folding chairs to get a feel for the movement. Today, we received two prototypes from our scene designer and set construction crew. They look great! They even spiked out the placement and dimensions of the chess board so we can get a feel for the size and shape. We're so excited!!

Greetings!

Hello Blog readers!

This is Mark, and I am one of the two resident dramaturgs as well as actor for The Tempest Project. As our friendly AD Kim put it, we are well underway into rehearsals. The process so far has been a unique experience from any other production I have been involved in. Very soon, you'll see some of our rehearsal process on Youtube, but for now we ask your patience. Also, keep our wiki page in mind. It will be updated soon as well.

Thanks!
-Mark

A peek at what's to come...

Hello all!

it's your friendly neighborhood AD signing on to tell you what's coming up for you here on our blog. As soon as I get the software to upload video, you'll get clips of the rehearsal process so you can follow along with us as we create monumental scenes with movement, people, sound, puppets and object theater. You'll also get to see stills of our rehearsals take by both myself and our two Dramaturgs, Mark (also playing Sebastian) and Shawna. In addition, you will read blog posts written by other company members in addition to myself.

If you'd like more information, check out our wiki: http://tempestproject.pbwiki.com

or our YouTube channel: search for theTempestProject

We'll see you soon!

What is this story?

Hello, World!

We are entering week 3 of rehearsals on the world-premier, completely original production The Tempest Project presented by TheatreUNCA. This production will combine Shakespeare's original text of The Tempest with text from W. H. Auden's The Sea and the Mirror and incorporate object theatre, movement and storytelling into a dynamic show that will tour Western North Carolina in April.

There will be lots more information to come: renderings, photos, video, sound clips and more!

Signing off,
Kim
Assistant Director, The Tempest Project
